Daughters of Wisdom Playing This Weekend

In partnership with Film Action Oregon's Weekend Documentary series, the Portland Women's Film Festival is proud to present DAUGHTERS OF WISDOM.

*

In beautiful, remote eastern Tibet, one visionary lama and 300 Buddhist nuns are changing their country’s centuries-old perception of gender and spirituality. Established in 1990 by Lama Norlha Rinpoche, the Kala Rongo Monastery has become a unique educational center for Tibetan women, offering them opportunities never previously available to females. Freed of a life of hard labor and gender-based expectations, the nuns find meaning, happiness and fulfillment through dedicating their lives to Buddhist spiritual practice.

Daughters of Wisdom is an intimate portrait of these women and of their rare community. Some shy, some outspoken, all committed to the often difficult life they have chosen, the nuns graciously allow director Bari Pearlman and her camera into their vibrant community and offer insight into their extraordinary lives.

Director Bari Pearlman in attendance this weekend!

In Tibetan with English subtitles. 68 minutes. Not Rated. Showing Saturday and Sunday at 1:30pm, 3:15pm & 5:00pm, Monday at 7:30pm.
